ST. LOUIS, MO (October 3, 2019) – Under a blazing sun, employees from Novus International, Inc. donned their team jerseys, strapped on their helmets and mounted their bikes in support of cancer research.
September 29 marked the 10th year of Pedal the Cause, a bicycle ride fundraiser for St. Louis-based Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. For the event, individuals and teams must meet fundraising goals based on the distance they plan to ride. One hundred percent of the dollars raised by riders go to fund cancer research initatives at Siteman. The event itself, the organization’s administrative costs, and fees associated with planning the event are paid for through corporate sponsors like Novus, an animal feed additive and nutrition company headquartered in Saint Charles, Mo.
Novus this year donated $15,000 to participate at the contributing sponsor level. Rachel Meyer, Novus’s global marketing manager and team co-captain, said Novus continues to sponsor Pedal and Cause to ensure that all of the fund raised go directly to support cancer research.
“Cancer has personally affected many Novus employees and it is important that we ensure the money that our team raises goes 100% to Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids,” she said. “This year Novus sponsored the cowbells that family and friends at the event used to cheer on their riders. It was great to hear those bells ring as our own team members crossed the finish line.”
Team Novus this year included 35 members from its Headquarters with some opting to spin on a stationary bike for an hour while others rode the distance, up to 100 miles. The team joined nearly 4,000 participants and on-lookers for the event in Chesterfield, Mo., that included inspirational films and speeches, giveaways from event partners as well as breakfast, lunch and beverages to help everyone refuel after their ride.
Heather Geringer, Novus’s business analyst and team co-captain, said the reason Novus employees particiate and support Pedal the Cause each year is simple.
“We’re all there for the same reason: we ride to cure cancer,” she said. “We want a world without cancer and the only way to achieve that goal is to fund cancer research. This event gives us the chance to help progress research without having a PhD.”
To date, Team Novus has raised $20,088.75 of its $35,000 goal for 2019. That amount doesn’t include matched employee donations through the Novus Fund program. Fundraising for the cause continues through October 31.
