Getting to Know Dr. Tamara Loeffler

What is your official title at Novus®?
Technical Services Manager, since “field veterinarian” was too simple…

How long have you been with Novus®?
I have been with Novus® for 2.5 years. Time really does fly when you work with birds!

What is your previous training?
This position is my first job out of school. I completed a Masters of Science in Poultry Nutrition at the University of Georgia, and a DVM from Mississippi State University.

In your role what is the most interesting thing you do?
I get to spend a lot of time on farms doing assessments on overall animal health, welfare, and management. I started off in all areas of poultry production, but now I visit swine accounts as well.

What is your favorite Novus® product?
My favorite product would have to be ACTIVATE® WD. It is a liquid product, and therefore, much easier to use on individual farms since it does not require any feed formulation.

What accomplishment or moment in your career are you most proud of?
I finally feel comfortable interacting with swine production folks! This is a big deal for me since I went into this position with a strong poultry focus. I have challenged myself to build relationships with young swine veterinarians and stay up to date on swine diseases and industry issues. I know my food animal professors would be proud.

What is the hardest question a customer has ever asked you?
“Why are you a veterinarian working for a feed additive company?” I get this question a lot.

How do you work with customers to address their needs and overcome challenges they face?
I always offer to visit the animals and be an extra set of eyes on the farm, so I can visualize some of the issues they are dealing with. While my age and limited experience can be a setback, I compensate by asking a lot of mindful questions, giving customers the opportunity to thoroughly assess their practices.

When you are not promoting Novus® products and formulating rations, what do you like to do?
I try to spend as much time with my fiancé and my dog when I am not traveling the country for work. I also enjoy hot yoga to clear my mind and never miss an opportunity to see some good live music.

If you had to choose only one book for your library, what would it be?

The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho.

Diets include supplemental zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) - often as inorganic salts or inorganic crystalline forms. The disadvantage of these inorganic sources is the mineral is unprotected from numerous antagonisms and interactions in the digestive tract. Consequently, the mineral can bind to these antagonists, preventing absorption. This can result in mineral inadequacies for achieving optimum health, performance, or structural integrity or extra costs to over-feed minerals that aren’t utilized by the animal.

MINTREX Cu provides less reactive copper (Cu) in the diet reducing the risk of oxidation of fats, leaving more energy for the piglet. Additionally, delivering more Cu to absorption sites in the intestine allowing for more uptake, a lower excretion and environmental impact and provides improved nursery performance at lower Cu inclusion rates compared to ITMs.

Heavier pigs can generate more profit. Several factors can limit or inhibit the amount a pig gains during grow-out. Optimizing factors such as genetics, management, environment and nutrition all play a role in the growth and performance of the animal; by optimizing just one of those factors such as copper (Cu) availability, more weight can be realized.
