Improve Structural Integrity and Animal Well-Being with MINTREX® Trace Minerals

When collagen isn’t properly formed, skin, bones and tendons can be damaged prior to processing, which can result in condemnations in the processing plant. Birds with weaker bones struggle throughout the grow-out period, leading to lower weight gains and an overall drop in performance. Birds with damaged skin and footpads are more susceptible to environmental challenges and weak bone structure. This can also lead to severe injuries resulting in poor animal well-being.

Studies show birds receiving MINTREX® trace minerals have less bone breakage, fewer disease challenges and ultimately fewer condemnations in the processing plant due to proper collagen formation compared to birds fed other trace mineral sources. Additionally, birds supplemented with MINTREX® had better footpad scores, leading to greater producer profitability (Stringfellow et al., 2014; Chen et al., 2016; Bekker et al., 2017).

MORE ON MINTREX®

Muscle Myopathies in Broilers Reduced with MINTREX® Trace Minerals

Woody breast (WB) and white striping (WS) are conditions which severely impact the profitability of broilers. One way to address the nutritional challenges associated with WB and WS, and maintain profitability, is through supplementing zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn). Zinc plays a significant role in collagen and keratin synthesis. Copper acts as an important co-factor of lysyl-oxidase, an enzyme controlling cross-linking of collagen and elastin. Manganese is critical for cartilage development, which is essential for proper bone development.

MINTREX® trace minerals provide highly bioavailable sources of Zn, Cu and Mn to broilers and deliver more mineral to the proper absorption site in the bird. With proper utilization of the mineral, broilers are better equipped with the nutritional tools to achieve optimal muscle growth and development. Studies show using MINTREX® trace minerals can optimize carcass quality compared to inorganic trace minerals. Broilers fed MINTREX® showed a reduction in moderate to severe woody breast at day 42 by up to 50 percent.

Getting to Know Dr. Tamara Loeffler

What is your official title at Novus®?
Technical Services Manager

How long have you been with Novus®?
I have been with Novus® for 2.5 years. Time really does fly when you work with birds!

What is your previous training?
This position is my first job out of school. I completed a Masters of Science in Poultry Nutrition at the University of Georgia, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University.

In your role, what is the most interesting thing you do?
I get to spend a lot of time on farms doing assessments on overall animal health, welfare and management. I started off in all areas of poultry production, but now I visit swine accounts as well.

What is your favorite Novus® product?
My favorite product would have to be ACTIVATE® WD. It is a liquid product, and therefore, much easier to use on individual farms since it does not require any feed formulation.

What accomplishment or moment in your career are you most proud of?
I finally feel comfortable interacting with swine production folks! This is a big deal for me since I went into this position with a strong poultry focus. I have challenged myself to build relationships with young swine veterinarians and stay up to date on swine diseases and industry issues. I know my food animal professors would be proud.

What is the hardest question a customer has ever asked you?
“Why are you a veterinarian working for a feed additive company?” I get this question a lot.

How do you work with customers to address their needs and overcome challenges they face?
I always offer to visit the animals and be an extra set of eyes on the farm, so I can visualize some of the issues they are dealing with. While my age and limited experience can be a setback, I compensate by asking a lot of mindful questions, which gives customers the opportunity to thoroughly assess their practices.

When you are not promoting Novus® products and formulating rations, what do you like to do?
I try to spend as much time with my fiancé and my dog when I am not traveling the country for work. I also enjoy hot yoga to clear my mind and never miss an opportunity to see some good live music.

If you had to choose only one book for your library, what would it be?
The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho.
