There are over 600 known carotenoids classified as either xanthophylls or carotenes. Carotenes are responsible for orange hues, but not all of the yellow colors in plants. All animals need carotenoids, but since they cannot produce these naturally-occurring nutrients, they must obtain them through their diet.
