Feed Hygiene

The ability to protect raw materials and finished feeds from harmful contaminants is crucial to ensure animal performance. Bacteria, mold, mycotoxins and aflatoxins rob ingredients of their value to the animal. By improving the microbiological quality of the feed, animals can utilize the full nutritional benefit of each ingredient with lowered risk for sickness.In addition to the benefits of strong animal performance, controlling pathogenic presence in feed can reduce the risk of farm-born diseases to public health. Animal feed plays an important part in the food chain and has implications for the composition and quality of the livestock products (milk, meat and eggs) that people consume.

Feed ingredients and finished feeds are susceptible to microbial contamination (Fungi, Salmonella, E. coli, etc.). This risk is present during harvest, storage, transport and feed production. Therefore, controlling pathogenic microorganisms in raw materials and feed at the very beginning of the production cycle (feed mill) is crucial to achieve an effective gut health management program.

Raw materials are the main source of contamination. Inclusion rate of the ingredients also plays a role in accessing the relative risk factor of contamination.

How to manage feed hygiene

Feed hygiene is usually managed by using technologies including heat treatments or/and the use of feed additives containing organic acids and formaldehyde.

Heat Treatments
Heat treatment is very effective tool for killing bacteria but there are factors such as the initial contamination of the mash feed and the amount of time in the conditioner which will affect the efficiency of the heat treatment. Weaknesses of heat treatment includes certain types of Salmonella being resistant (S.senftemberg, S.thomson) and effects on moisture and cell damaging.

Feed Additives - Organic Acid
Organic Acids are also frequently used to obtain feed hygiene. Though it has the toxic effect to microorganisms in the gut, it's disadvantages includes being mostly only effective in low to medium level of contamination and could potentially require higher inclusion for high level of contamination.

Feed Additive - Formaldehyde
A chemical disinfectant such as formaldehyde has a wellknown efficiency. Formaldehyde’s disruption of pathogen cell membranes and denaturation of pathogen proteins makes it particularly effective against vegetative gram-positive, gramnegative bacteria and mycoplasma. It has a mode of action complementary to organic acids, such as propionic acid, which disrupts hydrogen pumps and causes an increase in pH, impairing normal cellular processes. Comparison studies have shown that a combination of formaldehyde and propionic acid is stronger than either component alone because it acts at two different levels.

Bentonite is used as carrier of Formaldehyde in FORMYCINE Gold Px. Due to its small particle size, it allows for high dispersion of formaldehyde. Addtionally, it has high capacity of retaining molecules: allowing lower amount of formaldehyde in the product and high anti bacterial effectiveness.
