NOVUS® Enzyme Forum Elevates Understanding of Trypsin Inhibitors in Poultry and Swine Nutrition

São Paulo, BRAZIL (August 5, 2025) The pivotal role of feed ingredients in poultry and swine nutrition and the disruptive influence of trypsin inhibitors (TIs) was the focus of the 6th Enzyme Forum hosted by NOVUS, the global leader in intelligent nutrition, in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. The event brought together technical experts, industry partners, and producers to explore innovative solutions to longstanding challenges affecting animal performance and production profitability.
More Than a Barrier to Digestion—A Challenge to Profitability
Trypsin inhibitors, naturally occurring antinutritional factors in soybeans, present a significant obstacle to protein digestibility and amino acid absorption. When TIs are present they can impair proteolysis, leading to undigested protein in the intestines. This undigested protein can become a substrate for pathogenic bacterial growth, elevating gut health risks and reducing feed conversion efficiency and weight gain, ultimately compromising profitability potential.
“This is a very serious issue,” said Alessandro Lima, Commercial Director of NOVUS Latin America. “Producers must have accurate visibility into the presence and impact of trypsin inhibitors. NOVUS provides not only this insight but a global, data-driven benchmark that allows producers to take informed, strategic action.”
NOVUS’ proprietary database, developed through decades of soybean ingredient monitoring, enables precision in feed formulation to protect performance and returns on investment. “This data asset is a powerful differentiator, one that helps our customers solve today’s challenges with confidence,” Lima added.
Smarter Solutions Through Partnership and Insight
The forum underscored NOVUS’ commitment to intelligent nutrition—an approach that combines scientific expertise, customer collaboration, and smarter solutions. Technical Services Manager for Poultry Kelen Zavarize, Ph.D., emphasized that continuous innovation is vital as the composition and processing of soybean meal evolve.
“Producers know they must do more every day,” said Zavarize. “NOVUS is made of more; more science, more insight, more inspiration. Through events like the Enzyme Forum, we help our customers turn complex issues into opportunities for improvement with our CIBENZA® EP150 Protease Enzyme Feed Additive.”
A Unified Approach to Animal Protein Sustainability
The forum welcomed researchers, veterinarians, nutritionists, and market economists, including keynote contributions from Thiago Bernardino (Cepea), Everton Krabbe (Embrapa), and Jovanir Fernandes (UFPR), who explored the broader implications of TI presence in feed efficiency and market viability. Their insights reinforced the need for a holistic approach that begins at the soybean processing level and carries through the entire supply chain.
“It is vital that producers, processors, and all actors in the value chain understand the role of trypsin inhibitors,” noted Débora Reolon, Ph.D., Technical Services Manager for Swine at NOVUS. “This is not just a nutrition issue. It’s a productivity and profitability issue. NOVUS has solutions that support our partners and deliver better outcomes, from ingredient quality to animal performance.”
More Science. Better Outcomes.
Among the highlighted tools to combat TIs were exogenous proteases; enzymes that degrade TIs and increase protein digestibility. Research presented at the forum revealed that with the right protease strategy (one that includes CIBENZA® EP150 Protease Enzyme Feed Additive), the negative impact of TIs can be reduced by up to 65% (NOVUS internal research, Lessard 2025).
“NOVUS invests heavily in R&D because we understand that the needs in the field are constantly evolving,” said Rodrigo Bernardi, Business Manager, NOVUS Brazil. “Our mission is to remove nutritional bottlenecks before they become performance barriers. Forums like this help producers and industry leaders stay ahead.”
