How the New German Protein Evaluation System Can Improve Nitrogen Efficiency

Südekum

Through the collaboration of many experts including Dr. Südekum, a significant research update in the German Recommendations for Energy and Nutrients for Dairy Cows on formulating rations with digestible amino acids has been made available. NOVUS has partnered with Dr. Südekum to give you insight on the new German Protein System and the potential of formulating diets based on digestible amino acids to increase nitrogen efficiency on farm.

Supplementing with amino acids supports greater nitrogen efficiency through precise nutrient formulation. Better nitrogen efficiency allows for lower nitrogen excretion. By increasing the fat and protein concentration of fluid milk production, the overall environmental footprint of milk production can be reduced.

Dr. Karl-Heinz Südekum

Professor Emeritus of Animal Nutrition, University of Bonn in Germany

Dr. Südekum is a Professor Emeritus of Animal Nutrition at the University of Bonn in Germany and has served as part of the faculty from 2004-2023. He holds a “Diplom- Agraringenieur”, a Dr. Sc. Agr. and his “Habilitation”, qualification for the position of a full professor in Germany, from Christian-Albrechts-University, Kiel. His thesis covered intake, digestibility, and ruminal nutrient turnover in ruminants. His current research centers on the evaluation of feeds for ruminants focusing on protein and energy evaluation. Recently, he was an author and contributor of the new Recommendations for the Energy and Nutrient Supply of Dairy Cows (Empfehlungen zur Energie- und Nährstoffversorgung von Milchkühen).
